First-Year Families
Welcome, New Families!
We are excited to welcome you to our Spider community! While we work primarily with your student and expect them to take the lead in their college experience, we view parents and families as critical partners in your student’s success. Students often turn to their parents and families for advice and guidance, and we intentionally equip you with information and resources to support your student’s success.
We have multiple points of engagement with families, beginning in the Admission process and continuing through graduation.
- To support you in helping your student navigate their transition to UR, we host virtual sessions in the summer on topics like course registration, housing, and student wellness.
- In June and July, we host Welcome to the Web receptions in many cities around the country to provide you and your student with an opportunity to get to know other students and other families from your area.
- During New Spider Orientation in August, we offer parent and family sessions dedicated to answering your questions and providing you with the information to aid you in supporting your student to thrive thrive at Richmond.
- Family Weekend provides an opportunity to experience what it’s like to be a Spider: experience a lecture from inspiring faculty, learn more about co-curricular opportunities, connect with your student’s friends, professors, and mentors, and cheer on UR at one of our athletic competitions.
Throughout your student’s time here, we communicate with families in a variety of ways, especially our family newsletters, which will equip you with information on resources and upcoming opportunities, as well as highlight time-specific conversations to have with your student.
Again, welcome to our Spider web! We are so glad your family is joining us, and we’re excited to partner with you in empowering your student’s success.
